While finding inspiration for how I would like to continue this Celebration of Happiness a few days ago, I came across this video

and I thought it was the most brilliant, most wonderful, nicest thing someone could ever do (//whispers// even though it was kind of also an advertising platform for Coca Cola haha). So it got me thinking….hm, what can a couch potato (who spends half her life at home watching meaningless dramas) like me do to at least put a smile on someone’s face today?

And¬†bam, there my answer was right before me in the screen of the¬†laptop on my lap: THE INTERNET. Using my personal ask.fm account, I sent out 50 anonymous messages (yes, they were all the same — I realised afterwards that I could’ve personalised / customised all the messages……) to friends, acquaintances, and even complete strangers.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 8.22.09 pm Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 8.22.32 pm Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 8.22.46 pm Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 8.23.01 pm Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 8.23.12 pm Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 8.23.24 pm Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 8.23.34 pm

I don’t think I’ve ever felt this happy in¬†weeks. Even though it was just very very very small act of…not even kindness, but just ‘nice-ness’, it gave me this sense of satisfaction to know that I’d made these people at least just a little happier ūüôā And therein lay my motivation to continue this celebration, the main objective of which is to put smiles on people’s faces.

The purpose of the Internet should be THIS, you know. It should be a platform for you to tell people how lovely and perfect they are, instead of spread hate and waste your life typing mean comments.

So, I encourage you all to do something (NO MATTER HOW SMALL!) to make others at least a tad happier today ūüôā Write a nice note on a serviette and pass it to the¬†patron sitting next to you in a restaurant! Leave a nice comment on someone’s…I don’t know, Facebook status!¬†Tell your friends and family you love them!

Even the littlest things count.

because at the very heart of all of us, we are ūüôā We really are.

I love you all so so so so so very much.

Coming Out of Hibernation

It’s no secret that the Celebrating Happiness site has brought me so much happiness in the past months. Seeing it first getting attention from people around me and then people from all around the year, and then seeing it being recognised as a¬†legit initiative by my school’s Head of Year 4 — it was just like this huge…I wouldn’t call it an ego boost, but it made me feel good about myself. It made me feel like¬†“hey, I’m capable of bringing happiness to so many people. I’m not¬†invisible! My efforts haven’t gone to waste at all!”.

But throughout this whole journey of using Celebrating Happiness (CH) as a platform for the Year 4 batch of 2014 in my school to reminisce the good ol’ days and celebrate their remaining 12 weeks (thus, the 12 Weeks of Happiness initiative) in RGS, I started to come under a whole lot of stress.

Getting people to cooperate, to pay attention, to you know, just show at least¬†some support — it was so difficult. I did 70% of the things all on my own, and there were times when I felt it was just¬†so unfair that we were still crediting the whole CH Organising Team when I was the only one doing the job. (Selfish, I know, but I’m being very very blunt and honest here — and I believe being honest¬†is always the best option.)

On top of that, while CH means¬†so so so much more to me than so many things else, it kind of saddened me to know for a fact¬†that now that the Year 4s of 2014 have graduated, CH has¬†probably been archived in their brains as just Something That Accompanied Through The Last Weeks in RGS. It saddened me to know that this whole ‘impact’ that CH has made was temporary. It saddened me to see the lack of appreciation.

This was why time and time again, I kept putting off reviving the CH site and letting things go ‘back to normal’, so to speak. I started having all these self-doubts about whether really, this initiative is worth it.

However, after weeks and weeks of pondering over whether or not¬†I wanted to continue this voyage (‘voyage’ sounds cool, eh?) of happiness, I discovered that everything was really just about¬†the truest of cliches:

Because of all the stress from¬†doing¬†one initiative¬†after another every week, I’d started seeing a half-full glass as half-empty. I’d started to neglect the fact that people¬†were¬†actually appreciating what CH was doing for them, and instead paid much much more¬†attention to the ones who barely paid any attention to CH. I started to see who¬†wasn’t doing the work, not who¬†was¬†devoting precious time and effort to the initiative.

And that was when it all fell back in place for me and I mustered up all the energy and courage to come back here.

I can’t promise you guys (you guys being whoever has been following this initiative) big changes in how things work around here on the Celebrating Happiness site, but I can promise that step by step, we will definitely arrive¬†somewhere we will¬†feel like we’ve accomplished something. One more smile, one less frown — we’ll work from the individual up to the crowd.

I love that people have still continued submitting Happy Submissions (please keep them coming!!). And I love that people have come up to me saying that this is a great initiative. And I love that people actually bother leaving wonderfully kind messages and comments on this site.

YOU ARE ALL SO LOVELY. (and I absolutely cannot believe I’d let myself lose sight of that)

Tomorrow, I’ll come back with another Happy Submission. And maybe the day after the day after the day after tomorrow, I’ll have made at least one more person smile. And to me, that’s enough — One¬†smile is always better, and much much more beautiful than a dozen¬†frowns.

If you’ve just read this whole 650+-word post, thank you¬†so much¬†for having taken the time to do so. I wish you the loveliest of days. ūüôā

Week 5 of Happiness: ROUND UP!!!

week 5

For Week 5 of Happiness, we celebrated the end of our EYAs in our own ways: watching the movies, unwinding by hanging out with friends, catching up on TV shows we gave up temporarily, etc.

But together, as the Year 4 Batch of 2014, we also celebrated it by passing the enthusiasm and willpower with which we faced our exams onto our juniors.

Having been in RGS for close to 4 years now, we’re pretty sure none of us has never gone through a stressful period where you thought, “This is it, man. I can’t do this anymore. PTs are so stupid, EYAs even more so. What’s the point???” But guess what? WE’VE BEEN THROUGH IT ALL. We’ve conquered those exams and fought the hardest by doing our very, very best.

And now, we’re passing on that fighter spirit to our juniors. Head down to this link (tinyurl.com/EYAEncouragement) to do that! Tell your juniors how much you love them, and tell them what so many friends had told you before when times got tough, and tell them that it’ll all be okay in the end. It may sound like the most cliche thing to say, but it’s true: EXAMS AREN’T EVERYTHING.¬†

On behalf of the Year 4s, the CH OT also did a little something for our lovely juniors ūüôā

Now that our stressful times are over, why not help your juniors out a little? Guide them along, show them some love, give them all the encouragement and strength that they need!! We know you care ūüôā

Week 4 of Happiness: ROUND UP!!!

Week 4 of Happiness: Celebrating the awesomeness of House! ‚̧ ‚̧ ‚̧

So it was the last ever House Day for us Year 4s today! ūüôā

Congratulations to Hadley, the Champion House of 2014!!!

And of course, good, good, good, awesome job, ALL HOUSES! I’m sure we’ve all loved and enjoyed all the things that House has planned and done for us these past 4 years.¬†From practising that SUPER GRACEFUL, SUPER BOOTIFUL mass dance, to participating in and being crazy during IHGs, the sweet, colourful memories with House are definitely ones we will keep with us for life.¬†

Here are some messages that our House Captains have written for us!! ūüôā¬†

From Rachel, our Tarbet Captain ‚̧¬†

From Alysee, our Tarbet Vice Captain ‚̧
house, for me, is where some of the best memories were formed and continue to be formed (: house has given me so much; all the laughter and smiles, all the tears, all the friendships, all the love :’) house is really something special, and i’ll always hold house close to my heart. ūüôā thank you house.¬†emojiemojiemojiemojiemoji

From Natalie, our Buckle Captain ‚̧¬†
there is no collage big enough to fit all the photos that remind me of house, no photos significant enough to remind me of my entire house journeyemoji , and no space big enough in my heart to remind me of my love for house ♡ #cheesy #deep

wanted to do this a long time ago but didnt know how or when but¬†#12wohgave me the perfect chance to reflect on my 4 years in House so far :’) As my fav captain once said “We love our houses, but we love the people in it even more” I am so so grateful for the people who have made this journey so amazingemoji¬†– my batchmates (Kwan Jaz Gwee Yamin Cara ChinFang YY RuiEn Michal) who have been there every single step of the way, my lovely exco who i can always count on!!! for wi5ever for going through saigang together, my awesomesauce vcapt Maria Sharapova for being my pillar of support¬†emoji¬†and To my lovely juniors, Buckleans ’15 ’16 ’17 for being so cute (seeing all of you grow makes me feel ever so proud like a mama)emoji¬†and last but not least!! the house seniors for guiding me through everything and being my friends+”role models”emoji¬†– every single one of you have made me who I am today and I am so so thankful :’)))))

from including a picture of a toilet in my campaign speech, to making a fool of ourselves during house pracs every single wednesday (dancing mass dance in the mud), to Buck the ikea snake emoji that hasnt been washed for like 10 years and is full of sweat and tears, everything about House means so much to me and it will continue to do so even when im old and wrinkly.

really hope that the future generations share the same sentiments and that the house spirit continues to burn brighter than ever¬†emoji¬†because I can’t imagine how dull and meaningless my life would be without House ^_^¬†emojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemoji

From Maria, our Buckle Vice Captain ‚̧¬†
House is magic. It has given me many experiences and friends to last a lifetime. It has seen me grow (physically & as a person) throughout my 4 years in RG. It has changed the way I see the colours red, green, blue, yellow and purple, forever. There are so few constants in my life– but House is one of them ūüôā

From Beatrice, our Richardson Captain ‚̧
house, to me, is much more than 5 colours- it’s family, it’s love. house has defined my rg life and has shaped me to who I am today. from my first house prac till the last, house has helped me grow in so many ways possible. I am immensely grateful for friendships forged, experiences, and a journey like never before. it’s more than a position; it’s a sort of love that I can never describe. countless happy memories, so many people I’ve grown so comfortable with- people that have stuck with me and guided me through. when I look back and think of house, I know that an indescrible warmth will fill my heart, and it will only bring a smile to my face.¬†¬†emojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemojiemoji

From Jia Ling, our Richardson Vice Captain ‚̧¬†

From Karyn, our Waddle Captain ‚̧¬†

From Jiaying, our Waddle Vice Captain ‚̧
1/4 of my life has been spent being a House member!!! There are so many emotions and thoughts I have about House and I realise it’s really been one of the biggest parts of my life and I will try to explain them as best as I can, but some things will probably never be understandable in a way ūüôā Throughout these years, things have not always been smooth-sailing, and they have made every housecommer tired, stressed, and worried. But it’s also made each one of us feel and be different things. It’s made me happy, excited, spirited, and most of all, me. I am lucky enough to have learnt and grown in House and this journey will always be the one that defined me most in these 4 years, and I could never regret it. Because when I look back on it, every smile and tear has given me a lesson to keep for a lifetime¬†and I wouldn’t trade my House experience for the world. If there’s anything I want House to have been and be, I hope each House Practice, House Day, Sportsfest, Swimcarn, IHG Week, has given you and will give you the amount of spirit it ignites in me, and I hope the fire burns bright in each of our hearts – be them red, green, blue, yellow, or purple.¬†emojiemojiemojiemojiemoji

From Phyllis, our Hadley Captain ‚̧¬†
¬†honestly when i was first introduced to the house system in rgs i never knew it could have become such a big part of me right now and i’m so thankful that it has ūüôā throughout these four years, house has become a place where i (and many others) get to know many amazing people and do many amazing things – and other than being thankful for that, i’m just even more thankful and thankful and thankful for house¬†emojiemoji

From Wei Ting, our Hadley Vice Captain ‚̧¬†
